Root your Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S and flash custom recovery

There is no dearth of information over the Internet about rooting your phone and installing custom recovery. However, most articles do not share information about both rooting your phone and installing custom recovery at the same time. For this reason, we have presented here some methods on rooting and installing custom recovery on your Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S. This will save you time and efforts that otherwise would have been involved in searching information on Google.

It is important that you check your device number- Settings > About Phone
This is because the methods below for rooting and installing custom recovery is valid only for Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S, model number LT18i. In case, your device model does not match with the one given here, please do not attempt to flash this as this may result in bricking. We are not responsible for any damages that may occur due to the instructions given here.

Requirements to root your device and to install custom recovery on your Xperia Arc S:

• You should have the Ericsson Xperia Arc S, model number LT18i
• You should have a Windows PC
• Install ABD for your Ericsson Xperia Arc S, model number LT18i on your computer
• Follow the path Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging to enable USB Debugging on your phone
• Follow the path Settings > Applications > Unknown Sources to enable Unknown Sources
• Your phone should have minimum 80% charge. Better, if the phone is fully charged to power the entire flashing procedure.
• Data Backup: This is extremely important as during rooting, unlocking bootloader and installing custom recovery, your data may be lost or corrupted. Take a back up of important data from your Xperia Arc S’s memory to the SD card.

Rooting your Xperia Arc S:

You would require the Rooting 4.1.A.0.562 (stock ICS firmware). This Windows-only method is applicable for both locked and unlocked bootloaders. This method does two things. First, it roots your device using the Android emulator trick. Two, installs Busybox (1.18.4) as well as ICS-specific SU files. Check if your Xperia Arc S has the stock ICS firmware 4.1.A.0.562.

• Download DooMLoRD_v1_Xperia-2011-ICS-ROOT-emu-busybox-su.zip and save the file in C Drive on your computer
• Using 7-Zip, WinRAR, or some other file extraction software extract the contents of the zip file
• Connect your Xperia Arc S to your computer using the USB Cable
• Launch the runme.bat file and follow the instructions given on the screen
• At this stage, youtr phone will reboot a few times. When the script completes rooting your Xperia, you will see the message “ALL DONE”
With this, you have rooted your Xperia Arc S

Instructions for Rooting Xperia Arc S running on 4.0.2.A.0.62 (stock Android 2.3.4 firmware):

This process is not simple as it involves downgrading your firmware first to stock firmware 4.0.2.A.0.42 using a Generic Global,, and not using region specific firmware.

Instructions to Downgrade to stock firmware 4.0.2.A.0.42 Generic Global:

• Download the LT18i 4.0.2.A.0.42 Generic Global FTF
• Download Flashtool 0.6.9.1 to your PC
• Install Flashtool 0.6.9.1 using the following instructions:

• Liinux users can download the file from here: http://uploaded.to/file/o2ho5m6u
• Disable all anti-virus programs on your computer so that they do not interrupt with this tool
• Flash the LT18i 4.0.2.A.0.42 Generic Global FTF using Flashtool 0.6.9.1.
• Using DooMLoRD’s Easy Rooting Toolkit, root your Xperia Arc S
• Download DooMLoRD’s Easy Rooting Toolkit and save it on your computer.
• Using 7-Zip, WinRAR, or some other file extraction software extract the contents of the zip file
• Connect your Xperia Arc S to your computer using the USB Cable
• Launch the runme.bat file and follow the instructions given on the screen
• Proceed to OTA upgrade for 4.0.2.A.0.62.
• Rooting is lost if PC Companion is used to upgrade back to firmware 4.0.2.A.0.62. Hence, do not use it.

Your Xperia Arc S is successfuly rooted.

Instructions for installing ClockworkMod Recovery on your Xperia Arc S:

The ClockworkMod Recovery 5 can now be easily installed on your Xperia Arc S. The credit goes to recognized developers on XDA Developers- pvyParts and nobodyAtall. The Xperia Auto-CWM Installer app has been found compatible for both locked and unlocked bootloaders.

Visit the Google Play Store and download the Xperia Auto-CWM Installer. With this, you can conveniently install ClockworkMod Recovery on your Xperia Arc S without having to type numerous commands on command prompt. The Xperia Auto-CWM Installer works only if your Xperia Arc S is rooted and is running on stock 2.3 software. After installing the Xperia Auto-CWM Installer, you will see a checklist about the requirements for installing ClockworkMod Recovery. Ensure that you fulfill all these requirements, and then tap Install CWM 5 from the menu.

Well done! You have successfully rooted your Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S LT18i and installed ClockworkMod Recovery.
